First and only airing on November 17, 1978

I know this has been discussed to death in many a star wars forums, but with Yivvits and Mr Bubble making a fuss and treating us to wonderful holiday special podcasts. I just wanted to find out what might we be in store for giving the mile stone date.

You know... when I first saw that abomination a few years ago, I nearly felt sorry for George Lucas.  I suppose that might have been the lesson that made him so controlling of the property.  It's a good and a bad thing.  The Holiday Special is what happens when Lucas isn't driving.  The Phantom Menace is what happens when he is.  Hmmm..... well, in all fairness, Menace did have the advantage of being coherent.  The Holiday Special had the disadvantage of being made by a bunch of drunken Ewoks who ride the short bus, I believe.

Devoronians are red, Sullusts are blue, Lady Twi'Leks are hot, a sneaky Bothan stole my shoe...... geez that made no sense. ----Hubcap Skinxor

And A New Hope also happens when he is driving.  Lucas directed 5/6 films.  While he does make some questionable decisions, he is an amazing director.

Wow, thanks for the reminder.

I was ten when it aired, and in school the next day we were all very excited (4th grade). Yes, it was crap, but in context it wasn't TOO bad.

Where I lived, in 1978 none of my friends had VCRs, and we could only get moving images of Star Wars with that little toy movie camera thing (what IS that again?), the movie theater, or our imagination. Having the gang on TV with recycled movie footage was incredible! There were Star Destroyers! There's the Millenium Falcon! There's Han and Chewie!

Also, I had friends who had NEVER seen any Star Wars-- it was rated PG, we were ten, and their parents wouldn't budge.

bubs

P.S. I saw it in black and white-- family got our first color TV in 1979

OMG bubs!!

I remember seeing this, too! But we actually had a color TV! Believe me it was a privledge to have even that...rich grandparents helped :P... we all huddled around the console and watched excitedly with dad yelling at us to be quite!! hehe! Think I was in first grade... I'm surpised I remember it, considering I can't remember what I did last week! LOL!Embarrassed

It's All Good!

I would love to know how bad Mark Hamill looked with all that makeup on a black and white tv.

...slightly whiter.

I was 14 when the film came out, my parents weren't big on going to the movies so they'd never take us, I think it played briefly at the one rundown little theater we had in town... so it was well after Empire before I got to see the first film in it's entirety... but between what was showed in clips, and several 8mm versions of the film I had, there wasn't a second I didn't see...

I was 15 in 78, and I don't remember expecting much of the holiday special...  do remember thinking it was hopelessly cheesey... I think the only reason I watched it was for the Boba Fett cartoon segment.

LoL, I was in the same boat.... we were WELL into the 80's before my parent broke down and bought a color TV.

Hehe...never really had the joy of watching the whole thing...pulled out the iPod though and looked it up on youtube...it was okay, not the best thing I've ever seen, but who cares! It's STAR WARS!!!

...allthough I think chewie's dad should have been named "Clumps"...

THIS END UP /\

Nwee woulnd linke to knnow dee american....neyeehhh...Tank you! Beyyyyyy........

I vaguely remember seeing SW:ANH in the theatres.  What bits I know about the experience comes more from my mother who said my dad came home and stated, "All of you have to see this movie."  Then promptly took us all to see it.  I also vaguely remember the holiday special, it was Star Wars therefore it was amazing.  I watched again a few years back and cringed through the whole thing.

I did a google search for "Star Wars Holiday Special" and found the entire program on google videos. I'll never get those two hours back.
