Listening to it right now ^^!

Interesting, I hope Pooja Naberrie and Kylantha will be in there.

For the rebelion! For free doom! I mean freedom.

LOL. Leave TCG loot out of it. Yeah, I guess the Chronicle holocron system thing would kinda go down the toilet if it was TCG.

As R. Lee Ermey would say: OOH RAA!

OMG! The dev team has left the cockpit and the players are now flying the plane. Has SOE run out of ideas for new quest content? Gold farmers will have a field day with this system i.e. Han Solo say "Buy gold from XYZ.net" But will they fix targeting?

I'm pretty sure LA/SOE ran out of ideas around 2003... I've been waiting for "content" for nearly 4 years.     I'm certainly happy that players will be developing content... ok, so I'm sure that like Spore, 90% of it will be crap, but I'm sure there'll also be some real gems.

Your right Swiftwind, but now SOE has essentially said we won't be making new quests. To turn over new quests to players is, IMO, not a good thing. That just means less devs devoted to making SWG better. I also think if there is a player quest that is great that SOE will say "We can't (won't) pay you for this but can we place this quest on all the other servers?"  Whats next for SWG, player hosting servers in their homes (ala EMU) or possibly players developing source code for SWG in exchange for playing time.

Difficult to see the future is, clouding it the Dark Side does.

Wow, lots more negative feelings on this new system than I had expected. All good points of course, but let me add some comments for you to consider:

  1. Of the many things a lot of us miss from the "good old days" what is the common theme? Sandbox play. This system is about as sandbox as you can get when it comes to crafting your own stories/quests. That is a good thing, right? This system was part of the original storyteller design from waaay back.

  2. The developers stated a number of times during the weekend that the intent isn't to make a system so they can stop working on SWG. Nothing said during FF would lead me to believe the intent is to make less work for devs. Now obviously it seems like this system could be used to place development in the hands of players instead of Devs. Is that a bad thing? How many times have you thought to yourself that the players of SWG are better at making content than the developers?

  3. If the intent IS to remove development support from SWG how is this system bad? I see it as them positioning themselves for the inevitable fact that some day they will go into maintenance mode - something that happens in *every* MMO at some point. This system means that even if that happens players will have the ability to make and consume constantly new content. Right?

  4. Exploits - Hear me now, believe me later: SOE is doing EVERYTHING they can to limit the plague of credit / item farming / selling. Don't think for a second that they are making this system only to give those farmers more power. Listen to the SOE community address if you want to hear more. Besides, all the rewards (items and credits) MUST be put in the quest by the maker. They don't just magically appear. If you want to give somebody 2mil credits for finishing a quest it is coming out of your own bank account. Each copy of the quest you make will require that same amount from your own bank account. I'm not sure how that is exploitable.

  5. I'll say it again: I'm not sure it's fair to say the developers are being un-creative by putting this in. In fact I feel it is hypocritical to say so based on how many times we tell them that we want to make our own SW experience in SWG. We want sandbox, they give us sandbox, and then we tell them they suck? Think about it... that isn't fair.

I'd shake your hand, but I still have the ticket collector at the starport targeted.

I'm really surprised by the number of people who say "this must mean the devs have given up".    To me that makes absolutely no sense at all.   If the devs had given up they wouldn't be bothering to give us more tools like this.    This system is exactly what we should have had at launch so we wouldn't have to wait for content that may or may not be something we are interested in.

I realize not every addition to the game appeals to every player but for me personally this is exactly the type of system this game needs.

Risia_Vyle:
Your right Swiftwind, but now SOE has essentially said we won't be making new quests. To turn over new quests to players is, IMO, not a good thing

I really have to disagree, this has to be one of the best thing post-NGE things to happen to the game. I'm so psyched for this new system!... If it every got to the point where I could create my own instanced area, I'll absolutely lose my mind!!!

When's the last time SOE created a significant quest chain?  What exactlly are we getting now, that we won't get with the new system?  for years I've head players, my self included, complain about the lack of content in the game, and now for the for the first time we're finally going to be given the tools to correct that.   Think about it,  This is the first time that there will be game content that doesn't have to pass by LA, There can finally be quests that actually have something to do with Star Wars, Roll players will finally have something real to do and create, and most importantly this is a significant move back toward sandbox play!  If the new system goes well, and if SOE continues to developer it, this could literally be a real "game changer"  that we've been waiting for.

Risia_Vyle:
I also think if there is a player quest that is great that SOE will say "We can't (won't) pay you for this but can we place this quest on all the other servers?"  Whats next for SWG, player hosting servers in their homes (ala EMU) or possibly players developing source code for SWG in exchange for playing time.

Using the mother of all player created content as an example, look at Spore.  First, as I've said before, 90+ percent of the player created content is junk, but out all that emerges some really great stuff.   Second, most of the point of player created content is to share it with other players.  In SWG it sounds like the quest holocrons will be tradeable so the content creator can be selective about who get's his quest, and if they want they can sell them for game credits. It's possible SOE may at some point do some sort of cross server public quest exchange, which I think would be a fantastic thing, and I'm certain that it's going to be a creator submitted deal.

I get the sarcasm, but I think you're overstating the "threat"... We're not going to missing any LA/SOE "new content"  The reality is that they're not doing major expansions, and if we're luck we get one significant game improvement every year or so.  We may not be getting the same level of development as EQ, but they're still giving us improvements.

I appreciate all the points all of you are bringing to the table. I was there back in the "good old days", from Beta 2 & Beta 3 testing and online every day for 3 years until the NGE. I might still be a bitter old Zabrak for the NGE, but I am really trying not to be as negative on this subject even though this concept is not igniting my lightsaber.

Yivvits points:

1. When you say sandbox, I am assuming that you mean "do what you want at your own pace, choose your path and have fun". The pre-NGE had plenty of that but there was some LA/SOE direction as far as the "Galaxy Divided" & SW timeline was concerned. When SWG was still an MMORPG that was some of the best community interaction/building play ever.

2/3. Players making content. /wince Players that love this game (as I did in the beginning) might be able to create better content but it would still be:

  • a) limited to your server [at this time] so no other servers could experience the good content that might come out of this system unless they move or roll a toon on your server and
  • b) this is still a pay to play game, what are we getting from SOE for $15/mo.

4. /reservesjudgement

5. WHOA! back the landspeeder up Wookiee. I may think that the devs might be passing their responsibility of creating quests with this system, but I did not say that they outright sucked (except for the NGE). Giving a player something to do may be fine, but advancing the time line and getting immersed in the story would be more satisfying.

When you complete a quest you will be prompted to rate it.

I'd shake your hand, but I still have the ticket collector at the starport targeted.

This kind of misssion creation reminds me of SPORE GA. You create a mission, and somebody else plays it and rates it.

If it is half of what GA is, then it is going to be great.

By the way, sorry to ask this apparently obvious question to answer but... what is this sandbox thing you guys speak of?
