If you like your news couched in busines language, here's where the money talks
(EA Chief exec confirms KOTOR MMO)
though, if you listen to BioWare, this is where the other stuff walks.
(Bioware say 'no KOTOR link')
It's comin'! Though I'm a bit worried that they're already touting it as a WoW-beater. We all saw how that worked out for Smed when he said he was going to give WoW a 'bloody nose'...
July 17, 2008 - Reports surfaced today that EA CEO John Riccitiello confirmed that LucasArts and BioWare were indeed working on a Knights of the Old Republic MMO. Though it's been widely assumed that the developer and publisher were working on a Star Wars MMO based on the Knights of the Old Republic universe, this is the first time anyone has officially confirmed it.
When contacted about the statement, BioWare deferred to LucasArts whose representatives told us that they currently have "nothing to announce" regarding their association with BioWare. Even with both parties staying quiet on the issue, it's hard to discount Riccitiello's statements regarding the new game.
We'll dig into this a bit deeper and bring you more updates as soon as we can.
From a post on IGN
Question to you all that play. Now that another Star wars MMO is going to happen what will you do.
A. play both as long as SWG servers are still alive
B. Play the new one only because anything will be better than what I have now
C. Stay with SWG I am not playing in another time line
I Think with Comic con coming up and PAX we will here the Offical word.
I will still play swg but probably try it out or play it once in a while.
Almagill:It's comin'!
It's certainly stronger indications than anything that's come before... If it's true, it'll be interesting to see what they did, though if it turns out be entirely jedi-centric I don't think I'll personally be too interested.
I'm keeping my skeptic's hat on till there's an official announcement... The Kotor thing could still turn out to be a big smoke screen.

I love reading all the posts from people saying "Finally, SWG will die - take THAT Smed!" They have no idea what this game will be like, and all bets are for a very WoWish experience. All the pre-nge ex-swg players who are flipping out over this news are going to have a pretty rude awakening when they log into this new game.
SWG Pre-Cu, it will not be.
There is room for both SW mmo's. They are going to have very different mechanics and features. You think they're going to have dancing and storyteller in this new game? I highly doubt it. Crafting even on the level of post-nge? Don't think so. This is why I believe both can live.
I'd shake your hand, but I still have the ticket collector at the starport targeted.
Well, Swift... lol I mean the big-cheese of EA (which owns BioWare) is pretty official. :-p

I disagree. There isn't room for two StarWars MMOs. I agree they will be very different, and I for one hope they will NOT do Pre-CU style (although I like skill systems over class systems). Just for the record, I've been accused of being a Pre-CU fanboy alot but I'm not at all. I fully agreed with Sony that the old system was fatially flawed and had to be changed. I just think they botched the change is all.
Anyway, enough of that.
The reason I think there won't be both is as follows:
1) Sony learned a lesson with EQ when they made EQII. Having both EQ branded products on the market hurt both a little. Smed has talked about it before, but I'm too lazy to find the link.
2) The mechanics of the two games will be different, I'm sure, but the NGE mechanics are still rough, even years later. Animation speeds, no Z axis, no collision, poor FPS hybrid. The Bio-Ware game, whatever schemes they use, will be "native" to the engine. I.E. they won't be trying to shoe horn in one paradigm into an engine that wasn't made for it. Potentially, that alone will make the Bio-Ware game a much smoother experience. So for those people that are playing SWG because it's the only StarWars game in town....why not go with the smoother experience?
3) Lucas-Arts has enough diversity in the StarWars brand, they don't need the headache of trying to produce two different MMO's.
I'm sad about it, in a way, but I don't think SWG will remain in tact. I think it will be shut down.
They would not be putting in a trading card game an things like the Hoth experience with vehicular combat if it was in shutdown mode. SOE has NEVER shut down a game as long as it was generating net incoming. Never. Based on the current size of the dev team and the fact that (even if people don't believe it) the game is gaining new players means things are going OK. Will SWG take a hit in numbers when this new one comes out? Of course, just like it took a hit when WoW came out. But people always seem to come back to SWG because it still delivers things other MMOs can't.
Absolutely Yivvits, yes yes.
Why is this a BAD thing for SWG? I mean REALLY. WHY? THis is the most positive thing EVER for the franchise. Yes, people will switch their attention, but of COURSE it's going to look nothing or be nothing like SWG. It can't possibly... why would it? It's in a different time frame.
It's going to be fast-paced, fun, and DIFFERENT are the only things I'm expecting. And the timeline of KOTR gives them free reign to play with characters and ideas and minimize the "approval" process we've heard about SWG and Lucas.
Look at all the people that switch to whatever new game comes out (Conan, Hello Kitty Online, etc)... this will be a switch to something STAR WARS which is what keeps many of us playing SWG anyway.
NOW THERE ARE TWO OF THEM!
I can't wait!
MrBubble: NOW THERE ARE TWO OF THEM! I can't wait!
That is the right way to think.I use to work as a package designer for a company that had a starwars license. The reason is Lucas can hand out all kinds of licenses. Like we could not make 3.25 scale action figures because Kenner at the time had that but we could do busts and sculptures. The two were both Star wars I mean yeah we had a Luke as well but that never took away from the companies making other star wars products. I really think you could have many MMOs at the same time. Just have a license say for the first 3 movie time line, then another could have the rights to make one for the last 3. The amount that Lucas art has to do would be in my guess, just make sure it did not very from the properties they had the right for, not in a technical way. Like when we used stock art we had to clear that so as not to infringe on someone else designs that were out there.
Yivvits:Well, Swift... lol I mean the big-cheese of EA (which owns BioWare) is pretty official. :-p
My big thing is I just want it "announced" not just "alluded to"... lol, they've been playing this one so close to the chest for so long that I'll continue to be sceptical till I see some box art

My thoughts as well... they're putting way to much effort in SWG for a shelfing. As far as population, Hell, EQOA makes SGW look like a mall at Christmas and it's still going. I'm sure that it'll be a big draw at first ... and in under a week the "you're ruining the game" chatter will commence. KOTOR and SWG are going to be two vastly diffrent games in two diffrerent time lines and there's room for both.

Maybe you're right. I would be sad if SWG shut down. It was my first MMO and I'd miss it if I knew I could never get back in.
Maybe :)
Not to be cryptic or contrary, buuuuut...
If you have no way of "knowing" what something will be like, but you choose to go ahead and "know" it anyway, it says more about you than you probably meant to say.

Not 100% on topic but I saw this while I was looking at all the E3 news.
In an interview about the upcoming DC comics MMO Chris Cao and John Blakely had this to say
Q: This seems like a question for further down the road, but: this seems like an ideal game for regular patching rather than the expansion pack model.Do you guys have any sense of where you're going to go on that?
Blakey: We generally don't. What we're going to do is make sure there is valuable content being released at a reasonable rate. We've done that very successfully with Galaxies, I think we've done very well without the expansions.
